Chemical speciation of metals in sediment and their bioaccumulation in fish on three rivers around Dhaka City, Bangladesh

چکیده
As a forward step to understand the metal bioaccumulation in fish species, a study of trace metal speciation of sediment was achieved. Trace metals were measured in sediments and two fish species, Heteropneustes fossilis and Trichogaster fasciata by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Abundance of total trace metals in sediments varied in the following decreasing order: Cr > Ni > Pb > Cu > As > Cd. Sequential extraction tests revealed that the studied metals were predominantly associated with the residual fraction, followed by the organically bound phases. The range of metal content in fishes were Cr (1.8–4.8), Ni (1.0–3.1), Cu (2.5–7.2), As (0.22–0.43), Cd (0.011–0.068) and Pb (0.85–2.7 mg/kg fw), respectively. The rank of biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) for both species were in the descending order of Cu > Pb > As > Ni > Cr > Cd. Metals accumulation in fish exceeded the international permissible standards suggests that these species are not suitable for human consumption. Health Risk Assessment of Chromium-Accumulated Fish and Vegetables at Gulshan Lake of Bangladesh: A Case Study
The present study evaluates health risk assessment for inhabitants who are exposed to chromium in fishes and vegetables of the Gulshan Lake. In the fish, chromium concentration has amounted to 2.2 to 149.7 mg/kg, while in vegetables leaf and vegetables stem it has been 5.6 mg/kg and 12.0 mg/kg, respectively. What is more, in sediment it has been 179.5 to 308 mg/kg and in water, 4.0 to 16.9 mg/l...

The current paper determines heavy metals in sediments of six freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district from November 1999 to September 2000. The sampling took place in summer, rainy season, and winter, wherein for each season five soil samples were collected from the wetland at a depth of 0 – 15 cm. To assess the status of heavy metal pollution in the sediments, geo-accumulation factor (Ig...

متن کاملInvestigation of heavy metals accumulation in the sediment and body of carp fish in Aras River
Heavy metals are considered as the most dangerous water contaminants because of their possibility of bioaccumulation and toxic effects. This study tried to investigate the bio-availability of heavy metals in terms of Ni, Zn, Cu, Fe, Hg, Cd, and Pb in the sediment during dry seasons in Aras River basin located in Ardabil Province, north-west of Iran. Also the metal concentration in the skin and ...
